Comment on land area | The size of the contract is for exploration, not for extraction. Although the size of this plot relates to contract EIG-163, which was the main allocation in hands of Anglo Gold Ashanti, the company is the one with the highest number of exploration contract in the region. It has several others in Cajamarca and other municipalities close to this area.

Operating company | ||
Comment on investment chain | During the beginnings of the 2000s, Anglo Gold Ashanti had a subsidiary in Colombia for the preparation of the project. It was Kedhada Ltd. Once they felt that the extraction of the Gold in Tolima was possible, the project was 100% and directly held by Anglo Gold Ashanti

It has been mentioned that the activities of the AngloGold Ashanti in Colombia are somehow related to the presence of other mining multinationals such as the Greystar, B2Gold, Glencore and Goldfields. La Colosa is 100% managed by Anglo Gold, but they have other shared projects in Colombia with those companies, reducing the competition for mining licenses in the country. Additionally, it has been mentioned hat several directors of the Mining Agency of Colombia have ended up working for the company, which raises concerns.

Negative impacts for local communities | Environmental degradation, Socio-economic, Cultural loss, Displacement
Comment on negative impacts for local communities | First of all, the exploration area for the gold mine collides with the Central Forest Reserve. Only in the exploration activities, it has been found by the National University of Colombia that the levels of heavy metals, arsenic and others are exceeding the allowed levels by the current legislation. Some peasants in the region have asserted that the cost of living in Cajamarca has considerably increased and the spending of the workers goes mostly to the capital of the state and not to the municipality directly. Another aspect for consideration is the fact that several peasants have decided to leave agriculture and start working for the company as unskilled laborers. As it was previously mentioned, there was also displacement of some households just in the exploration phase of the project.
Received compensation (e.g. for damages or resettlements) | Resettlement of 51 families. Between 2010 and 2016 the company has invested US$ 2 Millions on social programs for labor training. They have reforested 8.39 hectares and held programs to reintroduce 16 young people to farming.

Overall comment | ||
Overall comment | Import of error check - Coordinator's overview comment: 0 | After a referendum held on March of 2017, the company has suspended almost all of its activities in Cajamarca. In the refererndum the community rejected the presence of any mining activity in the area. Nevertheless, the company expects to have permission to extract gold by 2020 and it is one of the most important projects of AGA in Colombia.
IMPORTANT!!: This deal refers only to exploration and not mineral extractions. Due to the political process ongoing in the municipality the project has never started. |
