Livelihoods in the villages around the mine are based on agriculture, artisanal mining, trading, fishing and employment at the Ity Gold Mine, which commenced operations in 1991. Wood and rubber processing factories are also sources of employment. The Daapleu and Gbéitouo developments reported that at least one member of the household was engaged in artisanal mining.
