s"The El Pavón Mining Project corresponds to the installation of an open-pit gold mine, limited to the extraction of the mineral, due to the dominant reaction of rejection on the part of the community.
The community, aware of the damage caused by mining companies in the country's past, claims that the mine would seriously affect the ecosystems of El Pavón Hill, contaminate the Yaoska River and make working conditions precarious. The community, with the support of the local government and the leadership of the Catholic and Evangelical Church and the Mesoamerican Movement against the Mining Extractive Model, the Humboldt Center, the Yaoska Guardians movement and the Matagalpa Women's Network, opposed the installation of the project.
The community has organized massive marches and demonstrations, the last of which took place in April 2014, when around 5,000 people walked 20 kilometers between Rancho Grande and Yaoska demonstrating their resounding rejection of the mine.
The government decided to deny the exploitation premises of the El Pavón mining project.
