Wells were drilled between 1986 and 1993 but construction of the power plant was delayed until the year 2000 when funds became available.The government is inviting bids for the tender of a structural rehabilitation of the plant in 2018. The second phase of Olkaria was commissioned in 2010 injecting an extra 35 MW of power making a total of 150MW of power produced through geothermal means. Olkaria II went on-stream in November 2003 when Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) commissioned two 35 MW units manufactured and installed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). I
