Local people did not consider foreign investors as intruders and new colonists but welcomed them, based on – at least partly justified – expectations of getting employment and highly needed infrastructure or other benefits as compensation for their land.

Many of the promised compensations have not materialised. TF did not pay any compensation in cash, but constructed different infrastructural buildings in each village such as dispensary, village office, water tank, etc. .

Dispensary, village office, water tank,etc. Building roads and bridges-In the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, the company has built and maintains over100km of village and district roads. Forest roads within the plantations, which are often used by villagers, are also regularly maintained. In Tanga, a 10km road between Langoni and Gendagenda was graded and maintained. Education-Tanga company has assisted in building a teachers’ staff house and renovating a classroom at Langoni primary school. Health care-During 2008, TFL facilitated the construction of a village and healthcare office in Langoni, Tanga, Tanzania. TFL has also agreed to construct a dispensary in Mtango. In Bukaleba, Uganda, medicalequipment including thermometers, blood pressure readers and stethoscopes were distributed to four local health centres and the district hospital. An HIV/ AIDS awareness programme for workers and their families was agreed on and is being implemented Communuty infrastructure-It was also agreed to start construction of a dispensary and a community hall, which is now under way.
