Comment on negative impacts for local communities
Allegations have emerged against French food and beverage company, Castel Group, and its subsidiary Sucrerie Africaine de Centrafrique (SUCAF RCA). The claims suggest that for over six years, SUCAF RCA financially and logistically supported the violent armed group, Union for Peace in the Central African Republic (UPC), despite being aware of the group's involvement in human rights abuses, including mass killings and child soldier recruitment. The support allegedly helped maintain the company's monopoly on sugar distribution in several regions. The Sentry, which investigated the matter, states that despite knowledge of these atrocities, Castel Group continued to provide support to the group, thus fueling conflict in the Central African Republic. If these allegations are proven, Castel Group could face significant legal and reputational consequences.
