irst conceived in the 1970s, oil palm growing in Uganda only gained traction after OPUL came on board in 2003, under a $100 million project sponsored by the International Fund for Agricultural Development IFAD The development, a 40,000 ha joint venture involving (among others) the Ugandan government and international oil palm giant Wilmar The palm oil project is supported by the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (Ifad). BIDCO is the main private-sector partner; its executing agency for plantation development is Oil Palm Uganda Ltd. (OPUL). The World Bank withdrew from the projects, with concerns that the project would not meet the bank's policies on forestry. Madhvani Group was initially attracted to the project, but later declined.
