Displacement of people
Comment on displacement of people
Considerable outmigration from Tademe has occurred, especially outmigration of younger people. Other residents were resettled on lower-lying land. At the time of the report, homes had been built for two-thirds of the resettled people, but these people had not received the promised water, electricity, toilets, and improved drainage.
Promised or received compensation
Promised compensation (e.g. for damages or resettlements)
Community members would lose their access to the cultivated land, but, depending on the court decision, they could receive the sale price.
Compensation was paid to most people who lost their land in Mafi Dove, but people in Tademe were not compensated. Also, in Mafi Dove, both men and women were compensated for the loss of crops on their own land, but not for the loss of commons resources, which included valuable fruit trees (including mangoes and tamarind) that were previously sold to outsiders.
