Comment on recognition status of community land tenure
These are quilombola communities certified by the Palmares Foundation. Thus, their rights are recognized by the Brazilian State. According to data from the 2022 Demographic Census, managed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), there are 754 quilombolas living in quilombola territories in the municipality of Conceição da Barra. At the same time, there are 3,293 quilombolas living outside their territories in the municipality, which highlights a process of detachment from their traditional lands.

Comment on presence of land conflicts
The company began its expansion in the 1970s, and conflicts have been ongoing since then, intensifying in recent years. The company is expanding primarily into unassigned public lands (i.e., state-owned lands). These areas are occupied by traditional quilombola communities (whose rights are recognized) and areas of small producers.

Environmental degradation, Socio-economic, Cultural loss, Displacement, Violence
Comment on negative impacts for local communities
The impacts are multiple, cumulative, and interconnected: Environmental Degradation: Loss of soil fertility; drying up of river springs; water scarcity; contamination of water and soil; indiscriminate use of pesticides; contamination of food crops. It results in health damages. Socioeconomic Impacts: Due to the indiscriminate use of pesticides, communities are unable to produce food for consumption and sale, resulting in impacts on family income. Additionally, Suzano employs very few people in the municipality. Cultural Loss: Quilombola communities have traditional uses of their territory based on their productive practices and ancestral relationships with the land. With the expansion of eucalyptus cultivation, the continuation of these practices becomes increasingly difficult. Displacement: There is a displacement of the population towards the urban area of Conceição da Barra and other urban centers. This displacement contributes to cultural loss. Violence: The company operates with violence in the area and frequently invades quilombola territories.
