Eastern Europe

Decentralisation is essential in improving data quality and promoting transparency and accountability in decisions over land and investments. To support this process, the Land Matrix has four Regional Focal Points (RFPs) in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America which assist with data collection, research, advocacy, networking, and communication, as well as the establishment of National Land Observatories in selected countries.

Large-scale land acquisitions (LSLAs) have taken place across Eastern Europe, with large tracts of agricultural land owned by multinational investors. At the same time, increased poverty, lack of education, and migration of young people to Western European countries has weakened rural communities and left them exposed to speculative interests.

Eastern Europe Regional Focal Point

About

The Eastern Europe RFP is coordinated by the Centre for Environmental Initiatives Ecoaction, a new partner in the region which aims to facilitate data entry, communication, and research. Its overall goal is to create a network of stakeholders throughout Eastern Europe and increase their involvement in the land debate.

While land ownership has transformed in Eastern Europe over the last 25 years, it has been happening at different rates across the region. For example, some countries, like Bulgaria, have joint European Union markets, while others, such as the Ukraine, have introduced a moratorium on the introduction of the trade of agricultural land. Various national civil society actors are in the process of reviewing land deals at the request of local communities, particularly with regard to the development of massive industrial animal farms in their countries. Ecoaction is undertaking research on the problematic issues related to this as well in terms of the impact on people and the environment.
