The increase in eucalyptus cultivation in the municipality of Imperatriz and in the surrounding region has resulted in a decrease in food cultivation. According to data from the Production of Vegetal Extraction and Silviculture 2020, from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), in 2013, 5,859 hectares of eucalyptus were cultivated in the municipality of Imperatriz, while in 2020 the cultivated area was 7,827 hectares. In 2016, the Federal Court ordered the suspension of further deforestation by Suzano Papel e Celulose S.A in the Cerrado region of Maranhão due to the environmental impacts caused by the cultivation of eucalyptus in the Baixo Parnaíba region.
