Overall comment
Import of error check - Reviewer's overview comment: In July-August 2005, a local peasants' manifestation against a proposed development of the Rio Blanco Mine was violently repressed by police (one killed, sexual abuses) and the Monterrico Company accused of beeing complicit in torture and mistreatment (which Monterrico denies). Its security service would have participated in the repression (and in other violent provocations). A complex international judicial procedure is in course. "The case appears to highlight conflicts in Peru and elsewhere between indigenous communities and multinational mining operations." "In 2006 the National Ombudsman (Peru) concluded that the company was occupying the land unlawfully because there was no requisite consent of the communities." (International and peruvian norms about local population's consent to mining exploitation have not been respected.)
