According to a media source 50 hectares of land in Adbdulrahmon Jomi district and 415 hectares in Rumi district have already been handed over, and negotiations are underway regarding 200 additional hectares in Yovon district.

The intention of investment is unclear. Some Tajik analysts say China is not actually interested in rehabilitating agricultural land in Tajikistan but wants to expand Chinese influence by setting up a base on Tajik territory. Former Tajik Agriculture Minister Vahhob Vohidov noted that the Chinese farmers will not be growing rice or any other new crop for Tajikistan. He said the Rumi and Yovon districts are good for growing cotton.

No direct rejection is given in the project but due to the other China investments in Tajikistan, Tajiks have increasingly expressed resentment towards the dominant role of the Chinese in their economy and perceived inequality in pay.

There is very little information on this deal. Need to monitor and update as new info becomes availble. This case needs to be further monitored. At this stage it is unclear if #5096 and #5095 are the same deal. I.e. have the same primary and secondary and are run under the same project.
