Heavy protests by locals causing fatal casualties forced the project to be relocated. Protests continue in newly assigned area.In addition to the deaths caused by the protests three children have drowned in irrigation canals dug by the company. Villagers have traveled to Europe, to the offices of Tampieri, in February 2014 to try to halt the project.

Ndiaël was labeled Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention intergovernmental treaty designed to protect and ensure the sustainable use of water resources. This protection was broken in 2011 when President Wade has changed the classification of the area to allow the company operate there .
