The Malindi County Council on July 22 approved an initial plan to cultivate 10,000 hectares. Under pressure from civil society, the Government has put an end to the project and prohibited the production of biofuels in the coastal region. Civil society revealed that the jatropha project could result in the destruction of 50 000 hectares of vegetation, including forests-- this increased government pressure to stop the project.

Comment on consultation of local community
The community members were not consulted when the negotiations were occurring. Another report states that community members who were interviewed stated that the company bribed municipal counselors to pass the resolution without proper consultation. While another interviewee stated that a community meeting was held, but that outside communities were brought in to 'support the meeting' and whenever the affected community raised concerns, they were jeered at by the outside community members.
