Mtanga Farms was set up in 2008 by Rick Ghaui, Alan Mayers , Richard Reynolds - a group of entrepreneurs focusing on Tanzania - a group of Tanzanian business people and a local farmer, and has since received investments from Lion's Head Global Partners, a UK merchant bank focused on Africa, and the Calvert Foundation. Another data source states 2009 instead of 2008.

"As it relates to Mtanga, I am bound by certain confidentiality restrictions, but it is public information that Voxtra, a Norwegian impact fund, is also an investor. everybody else is negligible (incl TFA)". He states that Lions Head is not an investor. "We were involved in setting up Mtanga Foods and have raised money for it in the past. That’s why the press associates us with the project."
