Comment on negotiation status
Contracts for 2375 hectares are confirmed by Dole although it is not clear whether this area extends to the farms operated by Dole's subsidiaries or solely refers to the areas directly cultivated by Dole Lanka. Dole was heavily critized by environmentalists for clearing forest land in the Somawathiya national park which is near its Kandakaduwa farm operated by the subsidiary Letsgrow Pvt. Ltd. In consequence of the protests in November 2011 Dole (secondary investor) said it had cancelled its agreement with Letsgrow (primary investor) and requested the latter to remove the established banana plantation. In june 2012 however it was reported that Letsgrow continued its operations with the backing of the army.
